The Crow's Nest - March 6, 2017
What a difference a day makes! Wow, today I look outside and at times there is a raging blizzard with very strong winds. I’m sure if I went outside and looked closely I might find some of Adams in our front yard. Last Sunday the temperature was so high, the wind was non-existent and the sun was so bright most of the residents of Edinburg were planning a vacation at the nearest lake. One of our sons said they had a huge thunder and lightning show in Kansas City last night along with high, high winds sweeping across the city.
Many of you readers are probably wondering if I had skipped town and left the “Crow’s Nest” up in the air. Well, I didn’t take quite such drastic measures, but I did take a hiatus to have a total knee replacement. Was it fun? NO. Was it worth it? ABSOLUTELY. After 4 weeks of recuperation I find every day is getting better. I also find I don’t know when I have been so busy. My daily schedule hardly affords time for any extra-curricular activities. I wake up early in the morning, have a cup of coffee and then I’m off to the races. First there is about 30 – 45 minutes of hard core therapy. I grunt and groan as I try to get my knee to bend a little more every day. Therapy takes place in Park River also 2 – 3 days a week. Then it is off to the shower to get myself ready for the day. After the shower comes “icing” time with a machine they sent home with me from the hospital. By then it is time for noon lunch, a quick nap and I start the procedure all over (minus the shower). This routine will happen one more time during the early evening hours. Poor Chuck has really had to fend for himself. It has only been the last couple of days I have felt like doing anything domestic. When this knee is fully healed, I will then start the process on my other knee. Within the next couple of months there are 3 more Edinburg ladies scheduled for knee replacement surgery. I wonder what they did back in the “good old days”? I imagine they just suffered through the pain.
What a great Sunday afternoon we had at Trinity Church last week. A retirement party was held for Eunice Evenson as she stepped down from playing the organ for church services. Eunice had played at Trinity for 57 years. She also started youth choirs there in 1959. What a legacy she leaves. The church was full of well-wishers for both Eunice and John. Former choir members came back and we surprised Eunice by singing her favorite hymn, Amazing Grace. They came from Fargo, Grand Forks, Hatton, Grafton and many surrounding towns. It was a fun afternoon for everyone.
I talked with Glenn Ohma at Eunice’s party and he said he was doing great after open heart surgery. He sure looks good. Rodney Nygard spent time in the hospital with what I heard was the flu. Jim Kertz is home after having his prostate removed. I haven’t heard how he is doing. That is the price I have to pay by not going down to the “Table if Knowledge” to catch up on all the gossip.
Floyd Gemmill, a longtime resident of the Fordville area died last week. Of course, most everyone knows that Floyd was born and raised on a farm west of Edinburg. Our sympathy goes out to Irma and her family. Floyd built many homes in this area.
Terri Carter, Lyle and Gail Gestson's daughter sent an email stating that Vernon Gestson passed away recently. She mentioned Dolly is the only one of that generation still living. Also, for those who remember Al Flaten, he died a few weeks ago. He had been residing in Florida. Sympathy to the friends and families of both these gentlemen.
What a happy occasion last Saturday night when Alyson McMartin and Taylor Hall were united in marriage. The wedding was beautiful and they both looked so happy. It was great seeing so many of the Hall family members who had come home for the celebration. Giana and Landry Hall (TJ and Katie’s) 2 daughters did such a super job being flower girls. Landry’s twin brother Laith was ring-bearer, but he fell and hit his head just before heading up the aisle so he sat with his dad and mom. Giana looked so darling standing up front through the whole ceremony.
A huge thank you to the wonderful care giver I have had this last month. I have been waited on “hand and foot” for every need I required. I think I’ll ask him to stay on even after I am fully recovered.
